I don’t blame you! So, you’re considering picking up Destiny 2 again after several years? Or better yet! You’ve heard from old Destiny veterans about the exciting news! And they’re looking to get the gang back together.

Whichever side you sit on the eternal struggle between light and darkness, there are some much-needed lore titbits you need to be aware of before diving back into several months or possibly years worth of content.

What Have I missed?

There is a lot to go over here, so allow me to provide you with a quick run down of the last four important seasons in Destiny:

  • Lightfall: Osiris has discovered Neptune’s city of Neomuna, which holds an ancient entity. However, the Witness’s has also discovered this fact — To which he entrusts the task of capturing the Veil to his Disciple, Emperor Calus, and uncover the Veil, a paracausal entity.
  • Season of Defiance: Guardians fight back against Shadow Legion and rescue prisoners in the EDZ.
  • Season of the Deep: Guardians return to Titan to recover an ancient secret and battle against the Lucent Hive.
  • Season of the Witch: Guardians assist Eris Morn in becoming a Hive god to prepare for the final confrontation with the Witness.
  • Season of the Wish: The Ahamkara have returned!? Queen Mara Sov and Osiris facilitate a dangerous bargain with Riven, the last Ahamkara, leveraging her wish-granting powers in exchange for the safe keeping of her clutch.
  • The Final Shape (upcoming): The Witness has entered the heart of the Traveler in order to enact its Final Shape. Guardians must stop this entity and finally bring an end to the long-standing conflict between Light and Darkness.

Who Is The Witness?

The Witness is the voice in the darkness (not to be confused with the Darkness) primary antagonist in Destiny 2, commanding the Black Fleet and embodying the Darkness.

As an ancient and powerful entity, the Witness orchestrated the Collapse and has been a manipulative force behind many adversities faced by humanity, seeking to reshape the universe according to its dark philosophy.

With its shadowy, ethereal appearance, the Witness stands as the ultimate challenge for Guardians, leading up to the final confrontation in the upcoming expansion, “The Final Shape”.

Why Is This Important?

As I mentioned before, the Witness is hell-bent on achieving its final perfected shape. Bringing the chaos of the universe under its control. Yes! This is literally the same objective that the Vex have.

The Vex are a time-travelling machine race in Destiny, blending biological and mechanical components. They manipulate time and reality, seeking to convert all life into their mechanized form and achieve universal order.

This final shape is the one main similarity that both the Witness and Vex have as creations of The Winnower. So, who or what is the Winnower?

This is my friend, an extremely valid question! And one I am not able to explain fully, because there just isn’t enough lore about this entity.

What is The Winnower?

The Winnower is a cosmic entity representing a fundamental force, often associated with Darkness. It’s part of a duo with the Gardener, who represents Light. They play a game with the universe, and the Winnower embodies the idea of pruning the weak.

In the beginning there was the Gardener and the Winnower, and they played a game of possibility. The Gardener sowed seeds in the day, and the Winnower reaped the day’s harvest in the evening. Which all took place before the creation of the Destiny universe. We can assume these entities to be god-like in nature. One offering benevolence and the other offering wickedness.

If you’d like to know more? I have a lore video which goes into much more details on what the Traveler and Winnower are, their battle and why it matters heading into the Final Shape expansion.

Present Day

The Sol System (Solar System), is in danger of being wiped out of existence by the Witness, if Guardians of the Last City, Cabal, Eliksni and Awoken don’t stand united together in the face of this major threat. It could be the end of the system as we know it.

Crow and Mara Sov

At the end of the Season of the Wish Crow (formerly Prince Uldren Sov), was sent through the Extra-spacial portal of the Traveler in order to create a link between him and his sister Mara Sov.

Both siblings are members of a Race called the Awoken, a people’s blessed by the Travelers touch and cursed by the corruption of the Darkness. This plan has to work! Crow needs to arrive safely within the Pale Heart of the Traveler and open a bridge for Guardians to enter.

Inside the pale heart of the Traveler.

Guardians, time is running out! And there is no telling what will happen to the Traveler, if the Witness is allowed to continue whatever it has been doing within the heart of the Traveler all this time.
