What Are The Dissenters?
The Dissenters are a small group of banished minds, within the collective thousands of minds, now part of the entity we knew as the Witness.
At the launch of Final Shape on, June 4th. This was a question every Destiny fan and lore theorist wondered. If you stumbled onto this article? You’re most-probably wondering what the shrouded ladies in Destiny’s is story all about? Grab a cosy spot, a drink and let’s venture into wild adventure, that in Bungie’s, Final Shape Campaign.
Sometime between the creation of Destiny’s universe and the ancient past, in the barren wasteland of an unknown world, travelers had come across a great machine. They called it the Gardener, because it blessed their world with life, vegetation and knowledge.
For millennia, these precursors knew peace and prosperity. Still, they would desire more from the Gardener. As they studied the Gardener (Traveler), they stumbled upon another entity amongst the stars linked to the Traveler, they called it the Veil.
By discovering the Veil, the precursors learned that by bringing the Traveler and the Veil together, it would allow them to shape reality.
To bring the chaos of the universe into one perfect shape. When they tried to combine them, the Traveler fled their world. Using the binding power of Darkness, the precursor people would combine themselves together, in order to become one entity named: The Witness.
So, the Dissenters are a collective of individuals minds, now part of the entity we knew as the Witness.
Were They Important?
Yes and no. The Dissenters were more important in the earlier years of Destiny’s story, before building up to the showdown of Final Shape. When Guardians defeated the Witness, it was unmade.
Here’s a fascinating part about this! The fight between the coalition of humanity and the Witness, was focused entirely, on finding a way to unmake the Witness.

What happens when you break a large LEGO structure? All the pieces scatter! You guessed it, thousands of minds that once made up the Witness entity have been released, unbound, untethered from a forced collective existence.
In the beginning, the Witness was made up of several factions within the precursor’s society. The Benefic, The Penitent, Solipsists and the Nihilist. These factions had many wars of their own, the Penitent was the only faction to stand above the rest, forcing those who remained to join them.
Whose strong desire was to merge and become the Witness. All the minds that were original one, have either become part of the Traveler, or through light and darkness they have become Echoe’s or become something else.
This hasn’t been discussed at all! Which is why putting an article together made sense, rather than attempting to put a super long, lore video together.
What is An Echoe?
After the Witness was defeated, and the Traveler free’d from darkness’ grip.
An aurora burst from the Traveler, light and darkness venting into open space, and from it strange anomalous objects flew out from within. One was tracked out into the distances between Neptune and Jupiter, in the orbital path of Nessus (a centaur world).
Others were seen speeding off towards the reef and far beyond.
The Future of Destiny’s Story
If you don’t know where to look, the future of Destiny, may seem dull. When on the contrary there is so!! Much waiting to be explored.
Episodes in Destiny’s story aren’t just about tying up loose-ends, but expanding the narrative to encompass many of the hidden lore beats, hiding in plain sight.
