What is The Veil?

The Veil is an entity representing Darkness. It sits apart from the Light (it’s counterpart), and linked to the Winnower. Being revealed in many facets: Dreams, Nightmares, Emotions, Pain and memory. It’s confirmed by the power of Strand (a power of the Darkness). A paracausal union of conjoining in tangible conscious realities.

If you’re a Sci-fi enthusiast struggling to understand the story and lore of Destiny, the game? I’ve got you covered! Destiny’s lore spans a whole decade. After the Witness’ defeat, paracausal power runs rampant in the Sol System.

Joining a new franchise can be exciting, but also overwhelming. In this article, identify the need-to-know story beats and definition of the Veil.

Here’s a quick rundown of the Destiny’s timeline to get you caught up.

The Origin of Destiny’s Universe

  • Beginning: Imagine a realm outside time and space, filled with raw energy, chemicals, unformed light, and darkness. This is “The Garden,” occupied by the Gardener and the Winnower. They played a flower game of possibilities, with roles of planting (creating life) and reaping (separating what is from what will be). In this garden, there was day and night before time.
  • How Destiny’s Universe Was Born: Unveiling lore shows that, these entities disagreed and exchanged force (they fought). During their struggle, the collision of Light and Dark caused the birth of the universe that currently exists within Destiny.
The lore entry called T = 0 describes how the pair wrestled for dominance. The power of Light vs Darkness, destabilized time and space. Allowing dark matter to condense and burst! Creating new galaxies and suns within a new universe.
  • Starting A New Game: After losing, the Gardener complained about the lack of diversity in the Garden, blaming the Winnower for the monotonous pattern that stifled possibilities. In response, the Gardener created a new rule of power and became part of the game, prompting the Winnower to do the same. This change aimed to introduce more variety and potential into the universe within Destiny.

Who Is The Gardener?

The Gardener is an enigmatic entity representing creation and Light (not to be confused with the Traveler), involved in the universe’s origin alongside the Winnower, who symbolizes destruction and Darkness.

Their cosmic conflict birthed the universe, embodying the duality of order and chaos. The Gardener is theorized to be connected to the Traveler, deepening the game’s rich lore.

Why is this important?

As I mentioned before, the Gardener and Winnower are each other’s opposite. Each entity has been given an assigned dominion and carries out the tasks related to their innate nature and purpose.

The Traveler and the Veil represent the Gardener and the Winnower. This parallels Greek mythology, where Chaos birthed Tartarus, Gaea, Nyx, and Eros; Gaea and Uranus then created Cronus, Rhea, and Aphrodite; followed by Cronus and Rhea creating Hestia, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Zeus, and Hera, continuing the cycle of creation.

Pantheon of the gods

By observing, Greek mythology, similar patterns can be seen. Picture an all-knowing entity or group of entities who created the Garden and placed the Gardener and Winnower within it. Thus giving birth to the creation of Worm god, Ahamkara, The Vex, Kril, Helium drinkers, Harmony, Eliksni, Cabal and so on.

If the Gardener and Winnower created Destiny’s universe and all within it. Then who created them in the first place? 👀

The link between the Traveler and Veil, we see activated by the Witness in Lightfall campaign, reveals a pre-existing connection between these two cosmic entities.

The Traveler represents Light and life, and empowers anyone who deemed worthy to wield it. Whilst the Veil represents pain and death and offers the same question to anyone willing to answer it.

The Tree of Silver Wings, or root like structure protruding from the Veil entity, suggests that once in their history the Traveler and Veil were once one complete entity, now separated after the new Flower game started.

Learn More About The Veil

Currently, in Destiny

Guardians recently received an exotic ship item called Nacre and with it arrived a mysterious lore entry, supposedly from the Winnower itself. If you have some? I would suggest reading it.

Here’s why it’s important? The entity suggests that everything that happened since the collapse and well after was all part of the plan. Even going on further to suppose, that all seen up to now haven’t been exact versions of the Final Shape, but sales-men equivalents.

The writer goes on to jest and make light of the Witness’ efforts. And shares it’s primal purpose to offer all across the universe (hinting at frontiers here), the opportunity to choose darkness instead of light. They emphasize the inevitability of decay and the resilience of life, inviting readers to ponder the profound truths hidden within the cosmos.
