Decoding Destiny 2’s Season of the Nine

The epic saga continues

How should we think about light and dark? Is it as simple as standing in the light or standing in the shadow cast by the sunlight?

This is the fervent tone echoed by Savathun in Destiny 2: Season of the Lost. One morning in October, I went for my 9:30am morning walk for inspiration on what to write about. During that walk, I felt caught in the brilliant light of the sun, but also the immense shadow cast from nearby buildings that lay to my right.

And I thought to myself, where have I seen this before. Then the riddle-like twisted words of Savathun (the somewhat evil protagonist) poised to strike like a viper in the dark. “Let me tell you a secret. If you ever want to see what’s been watching you since the very beginning, just stand on that line, and look…up.

What does this mean? Why share a potentially massive reveal with us now?

Savathun’s plan for a long time has been to use both the Event Horizon and the Distributary to find a way to subjugate the Hive tribute system, rid herself of her worm. A parasitic life-form gifted by the Worm gods, who are aligned with the Darkness.

What most don’t realize is that Queen Mara Sov has had multiple audiences with The Nine on many occasions, I would even go as far as to say that some aspects of the Dreaming City and the Awoken borrow influence and also power from The Nine.

Have a look at this flag from within Mara Sov’s chambers:

Let’s take a quick step back. Maybe you’re new to the Destiny story and you’re wondering who The Nine are? To keep it simple, The Nine are an omnipresent entity; a consciousness born from dark matter (space dust) that exist in a mysterious realm between time and space. They were born by the gravitational ebs and flows of dark matter from all the planets in our solar system.

Farfetched? Perhaps. But it would be difficult to dispute the validity of The Nine in playing a major role in events to come. If you are interested in reading more about Mara Sov’s relationship with The Nine you can find read more in the lore books, The Awoken Reef, Maraseena and Ecdysis.

Earlier this year, Bungie gave us a taste of what to expect on the 30th, December 2021. Within the reveal, some promotional images were provided. The image above depicts some kind of treasure room filled with golden ancient artifacts most fitting of the Nine and also spheres which appear to be a planetarium of some kind showcasing Jupiter and Europa.

On closer inspection, the trademark circle, rectangular and hexagonal patterns typically seen in Nine space can be observed within the room. But what is eve more fascinating that all that is the presence of Xur standing in what looks to be a dense foggy corridor leading elsewhere.

There is no telling how far the rabbit hole goes. If deduction and speculation serves me correctly, then it’s possible we are about to be tested again before our full encounter with Savathun in her awakened state soon with the arrival of The Witch Queen expansion on 22nd, February 2022.

Time is telling and so far Bungie have done an incredible job of presenting a rich reading, watching, and listening experience with the seasonal model, and I am genuinely thrilled by the possibilities surrounding Season of the Nine. If you are interested, I produced a short video this week sharing my thoughts on this concept you might find invigorating.

Though I could pour over lore for hours discussing the intricacies and delicacies of Destiny lore, that’s all I have to say on the dark matter mysteries of The Nine.
