Examining the Seasonal Approach in Destiny 2

Why Bungie is making the right moves

Are seasons the right choice? YES! Thank you for coming to my TeDTalk (kidding). Since the beginning, Bungie has ooh’d and aww’d us with their pro-quick quips and their living worlds. And isn’t that the dream? To exist in a digital space that is as alive as the reality we exist in offline.

I’m no expert in understanding the complex work of running a game studio. Yet I have had my fair share of experience reading, experiencing, and even creating games myself, and let me tell you something… it is not easy!

Over the last 6 years, Bungie has experienced its fair share of upheavals but I’m not here to recount the past…looking at you Curse of Osiris. No! I’m here to talk about the right now, the present.

In year 2 Bungie released the Forsaken expansion, and with it arrived Season of The Outlaw, ushering in a new era of content updates that would be delivered. While some players may debate the level of success, updates have continued to roll out for this live service game.

Regular updates have been rolled out to weapons balancing, subclass abilities, competitive modes (whether fast or slow), and changes to the open-world sandbox mechanics. No one can deny that something exciting and often inspiring has been created for thousands to enjoy.

So why is the seasonal model good?

Why not go with seasons? We are familiar with platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, or Disney Plus watching your favourite sci-fi, drama, or action series. But those seasons have a start and end, with some seasons longer than others.

Destiny 2 is seasonal, and that design allows the studio to have more development time. Complex tasks must be managed, such as creating game assets, recording a huge amount of fully voiced dialogue, performing motion capture, and creating the game’s look and sound. The list is endless and patience is important, but the end result has the chance to be better for it.

Don’t get me wrong; like many of you, I find myself playing other games while awaiting a new season, and that’s okay! Perhaps a shift of perspective could be in order, because how often are we thankful for the ability to enjoy these incredible stories?

There are 23 days left until the Season of [Redacted]. So far, we have had hints from devs about expecting an enhanced Appearance Customization to make its debut in Season 14. My hope is that along with it comes the sunsetting of seasonal gear and the loot pool being filled up more.

What can I do until season 14?

While we wait for the next season to roll in, players have the opportunity to join in on the fun of Guardian Games, kicking off on Tuesday 20th April. After defeating the Cabal, players will have a chance to join in on the festivities and celebrate victory with friendly Olympic-style objectives and game modes.

And the best part is it’s FREE for everyone!

So all hope is not lost while we wait for the next big content drop, and I’m looking forward to jumping into Guardian Games this week.

But that’s all I have for you. I hope you had enjoyed reading this article today, remember that no matter what you are facing at this moment, you can do all things!
