I had a feeling. Crimson Desert really is Black Desert Online reimagined as a single‑player epic. The gameplay blew me away, but the story isn’t quite what I expected.

A quick search of Crimson Desert on Google reveals a sea of commentary about this game. And don’t get me wrong, it does have its fair share of menu bugs, strange animations, or odd NPC behavior. It is a charming world of endless possibility.
I have said this once, and you will probably hear be say it again. 2026 is the year of Open world RPG’s. With titles like Fable, GTA6, The Blood Dawnwalker (not my cup of tea.), Saubnautica 2, and many more.
I spent the weeks leading up to the launch of CD (Crimson Desert) feeling quite cynical. I remained skeptical post-launch. The idea of spending £52 UK, and roughly $60 US on a game felt daunting.
I watched the Twitch streams and commentary videos, and everyone seemed to agree on one thing. Yet, I still questioned it. What is it about this game that drew me in? Honestly, I don’t usually play RPGs. The emotional intensity tied to my ADHD and gaming alone often felt overwhelming. (Don’t worry, I have a therapist.)
After tuning into @LanaLan’s stream on Saturday night, it hit me. This looks like so much fun! I calculated my finances, quickly purchased CD, installed it, and jumped into the game.
Is Crimson Desert Neurodivergent Friendly?
Each neurodivergent gaming experience will look different. There is no one-size-fits all. You need to find a game that gives you peace. It should also bring out the best in you.
But here’s a taste of my first hour. Loading into the game the first boss you will face is the loading screen. 150GB of game data is a massive amount of game to load. And it takes roughly 10–15 minutes on my NVIDIA GTX 1060 to load everything. So, be patient.
Note: Pearl Abyss team recently released a PC/MAC performance patch 1.01.01 on Tuesday 31st March
But after that? What an incredible sprawling living world. Finally! A title took me back to 13-year-old Smart. He was sitting on his bed at home spending countless hours playing Spider-Man, Pokémon, or Rayman. Gaming is therapy for me. It invites me into the unknown and encourages me to unpack trauma’s through convincing narrative stories.
Within the world and story of Crimson Desert, we have the Greymanes. They are a band of mercenaries from the region of Pailune. The Greymanes are the major protagonist faction within Crimson Desert. In a snapshot the story follows Kliff, a leader of the Greymanes. His clan is betrayed by one of their own. The betrayal occurs after the Black Bears raid their encampment and launch an assault.

Kill witnesses firsthand as each member of the Greymanes falls. Until eventually he himself suffers a fatal blow. One that NO-ONE-WOULD-SURVIVE! Wink! Wink, nudge, nudge! You get the point. While the story is actually fantastic. The order from a narrative perspective feels…. off.
After Chapter two, you spend three hours on side missions. Only then do you really start to sink your teeth into the wider story and world building of Crimson Desert. Were talking gods and monsters-size lore. SIGN ME UP!
You all know how much I love Fantasy and Sci-Fi lore! So, if you are looking for a title that blends the two together seamlessly? I would recommend giving Crimson Desert a try. No Studio is perfect.
In a way, Pearl Abyss does a great job of showcasing that. They also show their visual prowess for creating stunning, lived-in RPG worlds. Now, many of you reading this be thinking “I don’t care about the story.” and if that’s your preference that’s okay.
The truth is every game has story, and every game is made up of story. Crimson Desert has plenty of great story, but it doesn’t
Why are Studios using Generative AI?
I want to make something very clear. In no way do I support generative AI for the use of Game development. We’ve seen multiple cases of studios using Gen AI and still going on to win awards, or have them revoked.
As of writing this Pearl Abyss has issued a public apology on X (formerly known as Twitter) acknowledging their… undisclosed mistake. After a player on Reddit named Rex_Spy recently discovered a landscapae painting in Crimson Desert. It was generated by AI.
We would like to address questions regarding the use of AI in Crimson Desert.
During development, some 2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools. These assets helped us rapidly explore tone and atmosphere in the earlier phases of production.

The discussion around the use of Generative AI (GenAI) in game design is complex. It is often viewed negatively. Many perceive it as taking shortcuts in creating artwork.
Significant time and resources are devoted to research and development. This includes employing skilled professionals, sourcing design tools, and creating assets for games like Crimson Desert (CD). The game employs the proprietary BlackSpace Engine.
Despite the potential for creativity within the industry, studios sometimes use or hide assets unethically. High investment in large projects typically leads to pressure for prompt delivery, resulting in crunch periods and shortcuts. Instances Marathon the game illustrate the risks involved. Ambitious titles like Concord face challenges during long development phases. These challenges can lead to cancellations before they can be released.

Should Studios Be Using GenAI?
I’m not here to rationalize, or condone using AI. At the end of the day, it cheats the studio. Players miss out on experiencing a story. This story is painstakingly put together with love and care by a group of artists. Is that harsh? Yes, but an important truth. Not to drive us away from discussion but to draw us closer together in love and fellowship.
GenAI and AI Assistive tools are very different. The first does all the work. The second provides production assistance. It plays a support role in amplifying the organic creative process. There should be laws, and there needs to be defined limitations as to what that means. And what they can, or can’t do.
Protecting the creator economy is a huge deal. We need to see creative professionals, whether employed or freelance, have access to equal opportunities. They should not be limited by industry gate-keeping.
Crimson Desert was originally set to be an MMORPG. Behind the code and systems lies the amazing potential for Co-Op mode in future DLCs. And give Black Desert Online the same treatment. Both titles run on the same engine and share many systems, characters, and assets. It’s not difficult to imagine the world becoming intertwined further down the road.
Is Crimson Desert Neurodiverse-friendly?
Note: All opinions expressed come from my own experiences as a player.
👍🏾Why it is Neurodiverse-friendly
- Some accessibility settings exist. Including visual-comfort options, colour alternatives, and readable text. Audio controls and the ability to turn off vibrations or adaptive triggers are also available. These can help players sensitive to sensory overload.
- Camera and audio settings are adjustable. Players can fine‑tune sensitivity, auto‑centering, distance, and volume mixes. Useful for players who need reduced motion, clearer spatial cues, or less chaotic sensory input.
- No levelling system, and fixed difficulty levels. This makes the game less adaptable for players who need reduced combat intensity or pacing adjustments beyond gear‑based progression.
👎🏾Why it isn’t Neurodiverse-friendly
- There is no confirmed robust accessibility suite. Community discussions note uncertainty. There is also a lack of clear information about comprehensive accessibility features for disabled or neurodiverse players.
- High visual noise and lighting artifacts in certain environments might affect players. They can be overstimulating or distracting for those sensitive to visual clutter or rapid lighting transitions.
- No difficulty settings at all. This may make the game less adaptable for players who need reduced combat intensity. It also affects those who need pacing adjustments beyond gear‑based progression.
Crimson Desert holds multiple game-types at once. If you are looking for fast-paced action? It has it, if you prefer a slower sensory protected experience you can simply do life-skills. You can fish, tame wild horses, help citizens, and do good deeds. Are you an explorer looking for high-tier loot, adventure, and puzzles? You’ll find it within the world of Pywell.
So, if you’re wondering whether to drop $60 USA, or £50 UK on steam? I’ll leave that up to you. Personally, I think I’m quite ready, for another adventure!
