How Spider‑Man: New Day Captures Peter Parker’s Struggle Better Than Any Previous Film?

I’ll say it once, and I’ll say it again. Spider-man is my number one favourite hero of all time. Because as someone with ADHD I can relate to Peter Parker’s struggle.

If you hadn’t heard! Marvel Spider-Man’s: New Day trailer just dropped. The interwebs (myself included) are losing their minds due to the adaptation of wall-crawler’s comic issue 546.

It follows the events of Civil War, which took place on Earth 616. The biggest difference for the movie adaptation is that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is from Earth-199999. This is a different earth within the multiverse.

This new trailer sets the tone for the entire movie, and if I can be biased for a moment. It does an excellent job of giving web-heads a clean idea of what to expect from the trailer.

Now, there are so many things that stand out to me from this trailer. I don’t have time to explain, why I don’t have time to explain the lore here. If you’re familiar with my writing or YouTube content, you’ll know how often narrative bread crumbs is mentioned… yeah! This trailer is chock-full of the stuff.

Portrayal of Peter Parker

I would be foolish to say that. Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man lends itself so well to the character for two reasons.

One: Peter Parker experiences emotional intensity. Many other heroes don’t seem to experience this, or at least not in the way Peter does.

Two: Is actually because Tom Holland himself is Neurodivergent. Like me and so many of you reading this at the moment. This suits his acting style beautifully. Much of it comes from real, everyday lived experience.

Throughout the trailer, Peter experiences countless awkward and vivid social moments. MJ and Ned no longer remember who he is after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. You can imagine the turmoil. To really show suffering on screen is a difficult thing.

Holland does a fantastic job of bringing this to light. He gives viewers the depth of this street-level hero beyond just doing everything right. This includes doing well in school and beating the bad guys.

Becoming More Spider-Like

Yeah… you aren’t imagining things! That is Peter Parker dangling from what looks like a Spider’s cocoon. Many of you spidey fans will be familiar with Spectacular Spider-Man Vol 2 issues #15-20 back in 2004. Boy was it a feast for the eyes. — Written by Paul Jenkins these series of comic books showcased multiple stories featuring Captain America, and others.

Each comic featured a different cover where something strange was beginning to happen to Peter Parker. An arachnid metamorphosis where strange things start happening to him over the course of multiple comics. This can’t be read within the comic, because there is no actual story about it within the pages.

Within issues #525—528, Peter experiences a dramatic illness. His powers begin failing. This pushes him into a vulnerable state. His deeper mystical spider-totem nature starts to surface.

A villain called Morlun attacks him, forcing Peter to embrace the spider side of himself. He later dies leading to cococing himself. After that, Spider-Man is reborn with enhanced abilities. These are more spider-like, symbolizing an evolution. It shows the idea that he “becomes the spider” rather than just a man with powers.

I have no idea how much New Day will show. This version of the cocooning process appears grittier. It reminds me of The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield.

Moving Beyond The Past

New Day showcases a lot of stalking. Don’t panic! Or at least, don’t panic yet.

The trailer shows Peter Parker constantly keeping tabs on the only two people in his life. They kept him grounded and anchored in a life of M.I.T and fighting crime.

The psychological effect of having everyone forget who you are is taking its toll on Peter. Now, he not only keeps an eye on MJ and Ned. He literally lives across the hall from them.

But as life move along, so do the protagonists of their own lives. Other men are interested in MJ and there is nothing, that Peter can do to change that. He undergoes what feels like an intense version of puberty. Peter still tries to keep it together.

The life, experience, and background storytelling from Tobey Mcguire’s world already feel noticeable in Spider-Man: New Day. These elements have influenced Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man world has also blended into Tom Holland’s.

When a trailer captures the tone of a movie perfectly? Then you know you’re in for something good. And Spider-Man: New Day already look like it’s set to tell a great story.
