Is Destiny 2’s Future Tied to Marathon’s Success?

Marathon has taken social feeds by storm while Destiny drifts through Nine space. Destiny hasn’t felt this lost since the Curse of Osiris era — nearly nine years ago.

I like to have ambient noise in the background while I write. My inner games developer mind was active for a moment earlier in my day. This happened while I was drafting First thoughts on Marathon post. I watched Luminate’s live stream as she and her team ran back-to-back Outpost map sessions. When suddenly it hit me!

It was at that precise moment I got a glimpse of the future.

I, like many Destiny fans, have spent hours speculating about Destiny’s lore. We have debated and theorized about what the future will hold. I observed the loss of Lumi’s thermal sniper. Then, I saw enemy teams move in from behind. This got me thinking about Renegades and Bungie’s introduction of the Lawless Frontier.

What is a Dark Guardian?

A Dark Guardian is a lightbearer who embraces Darkness-aligned powers, specifically Stasis and Strand. They can be identified as Dredgens, followers of Dredgen Yor, or corrupted Guardians like the Kentarch-3 fireteam members. The world of Destiny, when envisioned within the framework of Marathon‘s Sandbox, reveals shared fundamental aspects. These shared aspects enhance Destiny’s narrative and gameplay. This is akin to the relationship between Warframe and Soulframe. Both IPs show strong collaboration, with new titles benefiting from the success of their predecessors. Mainline titles often experience dips in player numbers. Studios regularly analyse player behaviour and feedback. This is part of the game’s industry dynamics.

Bungie made their announcement on pushing back the next big expansion, Shadow & Order. Since then, morale has been at an all-time low. This isn’t the communities first rodeo, there have been multiple gaps between seasons larger than 5–6 months.

Unfortunately, this news comes after disappointing game updates. These include The Portal and Gear tiers. Additionally, older Raid content hasn’t been improved. As a former Destiny player, I understand the frustrations. The team has faced challenges, and many decisions result from the Sony-Bungie leadership structure, causing various issues in Destiny’s development.

Destiny 2 has been around for 8.5 years. That is an extremely long time for any creative medium. Yet, Destiny’s story and game still have the makings for something great. Marathon feels ALIVE! Something I sorely miss from the pre-Season of The Worthy days.

While I think demanding the wrong way to go about it as Destiny-Marathon world where features like:

  • Enemy incursions
  • Dynamic public events
  • Priority targets
  • Adaptive dungeons
  • Searchable loot
  • Distilled Raid-like encounters

Sure! It’s easy for me to sit here with 8 years of the Traveler and Hive Dynasty behind me. I can act like we haven’t had similar experiences. When actually we did! Public events, open world public events, raids of all shapes and sizes although sunset.

As an avid Destiny fan, I found it challenging. Things don’t look good right now. And it’s okay to have those real emotions. It’s okay to feel for people and passions. But we don’t have to be ruled by them. So, I’d like to encourage you for a moment. While Destiny’s future looks uncertain, spare a thought for the developers, both past and current. No one is feeling the weight or sting of “what if” more than them. There is a long road ahead. I pray the team gets peace of mind and body. They should enjoy doing their work and creating.
